Final Project S1
I chose to do my final project on Edvard Munch’s “Scream painting.” Edvard produced paintings in the 1890’s and he painted this famous artpeice in 1893. He received formal training throughout his career but also showed a little flair for drawing at an early age. This painting slowly became a popular representation of the human condition and icon of the anxiety of modern life. I chose to pick this specific art peice because it was always a peice of art that I was fascinated by. The subtle sense of weariness and uncannyness of this painting always grasped my attention in a way most other paintings didn’t. The painter's use of monochrome and dulled colors in the background that made the actual man in the middle pop out was a touch I really admired. I used a simple slab, cut it into a healthy sized square, then made another slab that was a little thicker and cut out the individual body parts. First I laid down the torso and the head and then I placed the hands on top of the torso to try and make it pop out at you a little more and I slip and scored that all to the original slab. I went in with a signing tool for the background and outlined some of the details the best I could. Challenges that I had while creating this was the color palette, the colors all swirled and mixed together in a way that I found challenging to recreate with the glaze. I tried my best to give the background a sense of movement with the highlights and the multiple different colors. I really did like how the guy turned out, I think he was the part I was most nervous about creating because if i didn’t make the proportions in just the right way I think he could have turned out a little more odd looking than intended but I think I did a pretty good job. I used cool blues and warm reds and yellows and oranges underglaze and then I used lagoon, violet, candy apple, bright white and black mayco glazes to finish the peice off. And I used a brown mayco glaze on the back.
Assembly
I created a slab square and then slip and scored the individual body parts on the square and went in with a needle tool and created the small background details. I also put down the basic colors I wanted to use in underglaze.
Final Firing
This is the piece after the final firing. I went in with some over-glazes and added highlights and the last few details.
